CMONGOOD.COM Interview's Muffy: Everything You Never Knew, You Always Wanted

Photobucket
I‘ve always found this girl Muffy, as she calls herself, confusing yet compelling. I personally, have never been able to resist any artist with crazy hair and a seemingly wild and fearless sense of style to match.  It just brings to mind a nonchalance that usually makes the person seem more interesting. In a psychedelic kind of way.  But who is she? Sweet, yummie, pop, bubbly, cupcakeiness can be very difficult to swallow even if over Bangladesh’s heavy on the synth beats. But once you get to listening to her, the sweetness becomes a reality because it’s not sugary or syrupy. She’s a Georgia girl all the way, with the Southern accent and all that makes her whole package more than palatable.

I decided once I heard the new single “Get Um Girls” ft. Gucci Mane that I wanted to interview her. Immediately she said something that made me skeptical about how itwas going to go. She stated that she was shy. In my head I was like girl please, who you think you fooling? As you can already guess I had my convictions about the type of person I thought she was. But as I kept asking her questions, I just let the interview unfold where it would and it lead me to truly understand many things. I said to myself: Self, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover and self you really have got to listen to some more of Muffy’s music.

She was so open to discuss things that I felt people might want to know. Not the things that you can find out in a biography, but just topics that will help to give you a well-rounded image of her and her music. That’s all you can really ask for until you actually meet her yourself. And why does she call herself Muffy anyway? Well because…that’s her name.

“But outside of being delicious, why should you like this artist? Because she’s different… a good, progressive different. This is a piece of that Atlanta pie that’s been churning out acts like Goodie Mob and Outkast and Janelle Monae for decades. The music is inventive, but not so aggressively avant-garde that it’s offputting. You listen to it and think “Wow, I guess everything hasn’t been done yet.”- Nikita Gale, Atlanta Examiner

CMONGOOD: Do you remember the very first song you heard on the radio that made you say wow, I want to do that?

Muffy: Ok the 1st song I heard I can’t remember actually but hmm one sec. Well my moms song was on the radio in Detroit. It’s a house song called “Share This House”…it was really exciting but it didn’t make me want to get on the radio. I think probably a Lauryn Hill or Lil Kim song might have made me get crunk.. But then again I just like every song on the radio, I’m corny like that.

CMONGOOD: So your mom was a singer too?

Muffy: Yes, she sang house music in Detroit, she wasn’t big, but she sang back up for George Clinton and had her own thang going on too. I thought she sang that song “loving you is easy cuz your beautiful” because she sang that to me every night. When I heard that on the radio I was like that’s my mom, but I was quickly corrected HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

CMONGOOD: That’s pretty cool. Is she a big supporter of your choice to get involved in the “industry”?

Muffy: Well not at 1st she wasn’t because she couldn’t see it singing and rapping. She thought I would be a better actress or model type but she is pretty supportive now that she see’s me making moves. I remind her that I am only an extension of her voice, of her spirit and that this is us not just me. I’m her only child and she was a single mom. We are close… I’m a Pisces and she’s a Leo… not that that’s so important but I just felt like sharing… (giggles)

CMONGOOD: It’s actually very important to me, because I do my best to read the stars and follow the horoscopes and all that. Do you believe in horoscopes?

Muffy: Well I believe in belief so what ever one believes in will manifest in some way and is there for truth for them. For me it’s like a fun guide from God/universe not to be mistaken for God/universe, Of course.

CMONGOOD: That’s so true because I feel like if you’re open to messages you can receive them in various ways. I don’t believe in anything “traditional” per say, so I get messages every where. Even street signs and fortune cookies are often on point. Where as, a Christian might get their’s from church or something. Do you think being involved in the music industry is kind of like practicing a religion?

Muffy: Wow… maybe… I never thought of it like that. Practicing any practice to be the best you kind of got to rock with it like a religion but its not my religion personally. Its a fun job its a way to live off the seeds of what I enjoy in this life. I’m more spiritual than religious I like something out of all religions. My pops is a Buddhist monk, his wife is a Christian. My mom is nondemonational and so is my step dad I think. I don’t know why we talk about the forces or good and evil a lot. We relate to things that interest us like ‘Star Wars’ and the movie artificial intelligence you know that movie AI. I have not ever been forced into one religion. After all my moms did name me Muffy, so we just be on our next-ness.

CMONGOOD: Muffy is your real name? Get the F outta here! Well you have been seen around a lot with Bangladesh who of course is getting that paper, so at this point are you able to “live off the seeds of what you enjoy” yet or are you still on the come up?

Muffy addresses those pesky rumors after the Jump

Muffy: Hahahahah its not my 1st name….. ok part two of the question. Naw I’m not getting it like Bangladesh. I’m living off those seed’s in a way that isn’t so concrete. I get taken care of from my team because of the seeds that are planted they know they are delicate so I get a lot of help. “They” meaning my seeds.

CMONGOOD: How are you living off those seeds in nonconcrete ways?

Muffy: I just got my own apartment. Before that I was living in my managers house. Where I was fed, clothed and my phone bill was paid. etc. They make sure my essential needs are taken care of while I’m in artist development mode.

CMONGOOD: Gotcha, so they take care of your necessities right now. Cool, that’s definitely how the team should hold each other down.

Muffy: We are more like a family then any thing else so it’s about the unit it takes a village to bake a muffin like me. Yea we hold each other down, they hold me down right now but really I’m not materialistic at all. Probably the next chick would be over it and expecting more but I see the bigger picture so I go without. But for me it’s really going with being blessed with sooo much.

CMONGOOD: Earlier you said you were shy but girl I have seen you perform and a shy bitch could not wear what you wear and do what you do on stage! Do you channel some kind of inner Muffy Tina Turner and just go with it?

Muffy: (giggles) I’m shy… I really am. One on one contact with humans, I’m not very good with. Very few people understand how to love me and what kind of love I have to give so I’m shy like one on one. On stage is different for me maybe I am channeling Billie Holiday or Miss Tina by mistake.

CMONGOOD: Have you had experiences in your life that have made kind of turn away from that one on one contact? Do you find an escape in music and style? I mean your whole package is very fantasy…very dreamlike.

Muffy: Well like I’m a Pisces so the fantasy dream like part is just me. Its really my reality; people who know me for real don’t get surprised by anything I do cuz they know I’m no front, not tryna be different. This is really me, but yeah I’m an only child so I just like aloneness. I like people too but they be buggin they get to envious and be buggin and I can never tell when they are sincere and I’m soo sincere all the time… too dang on sincere. That’s why I probably seem like a fantasy.. but I’m 100% jus Popular Cupcake Yummieness… its real. (giggles)

CMONGOOD: The realness is not a question for me because fake people change it up with every new fad and you have been very colorful and extreme since I first started hearing the buzz about you in 07. How do you feel about Amber Rose and Nikki Minaj?

Muffy: Nikki is dope and I love her voice and the Female MC game needs her. I think she is dope. Amber Rose is beautiful and a thick model. I love her, her butt reminds me of my own, its perfect. She is lucky to have Kanye, I love Kanye sooo much as an artist. I have no desire to meet the stars I enjoy cuz I don’t want to know there real selves.

CMONGOOD: LOL, that’s interesting! Do you think they might be assholes?

Muffy: Ohhh I’m scared to know if they are but I think they might, maybe I shouldn’t think like that, but I have met a few and they tend to be stuck in character. Which is usually “Meanie”, people love meanies.. I guess that’s why

CMONGOOD: You know and that’s very true cause at first I was like “Hi I’m Quianah, What’s your name? Let’s be friends!” Totally green. but people was like I don’t like her, she’s too….likeable or maybe they didn’t believe me, so now I’m a ”Meanie” I guess.  When you get home and you’ve just had a great day and you feel fulfilled with yourself and your achievements at that point what CD do you listen to?

Muffy: Erykah Badu.. all her cd’s are what I listen to the most. Gwen Stefani
and Kanye West and Bjork. No particular cd. Beyonce too and Jay Z.

CMONGOOD: Ok well pick one for me. If you just got home after recording, final mix everything was done and you walk in the door kick off your shoes, open the fridge grab some wine (if you drink) and play ____________CD. Whose would it be?

Muffy: Erykah Badu..

CMONGOOD: Amber Rose, Nikki Minaj, CoCo and Kim Kardashian have turned selling sexiness into an art form. Do you think you use your sexiness to pull the crowd into your stage act?

Muffy: Yea I think I am sexy (giggles)

CMONGOOD: Well I concur. What do you call your style of singing?

Muffy: Yummie pop because its yummie meaning irresistibly delicious, even when you don’t want it or me You Do and its Pop cuz it’s soon to be POPular

CMONGOOD: Do you listen to any of the local Atlanta acts?

Muffy: Yea my friend and peers.. Fiona Simone, Gripplyaz, Brittany Bosco, Waka Flocka Flame, Chose, GFC, Bangladesh, Foolery, Etc etc. Oh goodness if I leave someone out imma attract hate.. but I love all my sisters and brothers getting it out here in Atlanta

CMONGOOD: Yep love Grip and Fiona and I loved that song you and Grip did “Project Ho” that was my shit. What direction do you see yourself going with your music?

Muffy: I’m going in the direction of a Gwen Stefani or Lady Gaga Madonna. With a hip hop twist. I like to have fun so my music will inspire Fun and love forever and ever more

CMONGOOD: So I just featured your new song “Get Um Girls” the other day on my blog. And I am happy and proud (atl ho!) to say that it is fiyah. Now I just heard (at interview time) that there is an official version with Nikki Minaj on it. Is that true?

Muffy: I think Nikki did lay a verse that’s what I heard as well however I have not heard so I’m not sure. But she is poppin and popular Yummieness right now so it could be true and our teams are actually close musically speaking so maybe. I honestly can say I don’t know and I haven’t asked. I would like to do a song with her after I made my own staple as an artist in the industry. I’m not sure bout the remix.. maybe doe.

CMONGOOD: Ok. So you said your Mom could see you as an actress or model, have you ever considered one of those fields?

Muffy: Yes. I went to school for theater and I have modeled a bunch of times. I’ve done an Xbox ad that was all over NYC train stations and I did BET’s ‘Rip the Runway’ in 06 and a bunch of other thangs. I’m putting it out there that my music will lead me to both Fashion and Acting Outlets which I’m excited to look forward to.
CMONGOOD: Oh so you have greater aspirations then to be a singer/rapper/cupcak-er then? What else do you want to accomplish?

“I want my journey to be fulfilling but accomplishing concrete goals is not all that success is about to me. Although all those things are fun and cool and be spiritual exercises of growth and strength and power. I want to do stuff like have a big Family with 7 kids and a couple of adults. I want a village of love. (giggles) I want to do for others with out the media knowing. I want to inspire and teach and I want to learn more.”- Muffy

Muffy: Yes totally .. I want to be every thing I can be. this is America!! (giggles) over all this is the universe and we can manifest all that we want. I want my journey to be fulfilling but accomplishing concrete goals is not all that success is about to me. Although all those things are fun and cool spiritual exercises of growth and strength and power. I want to do stuff like have a big Family with 7 kids and a couple of adults. I want a village of love. (giggles) I want to do for others with out the media knowing. I want to inspire and teach and I want to learn more. I want to write more and not just lyrics for a song but words to inspire growth. I just want to always be growing until its time to move on from growth. I just don’t see that ever happening that’s why Jay-Z is still in the game. He knows growth is forever there is no time limit, no space, just us and our souls, brains and dreams and thoughts. And Goodness. I want to be and do and become sooo much I have a long way to go. I couldn’t say enough words to promise you what I’m going to get into because I’m ever changing and growing and saying what it’s going to be will possible stunt my growth. I’m a Pisces(giggles) I’m going to follow my heart that’s what your readers can expect.

CMONGOOD: Well what misconceptions would you like to clear up and what else would you like your fans to know about you?

Muffy: I don’t know the misconceptions, I would like to clear any up do you know any? I don’t mind going in about them. I jus want my fans to know that I refer to them as friends. I don’t much like that word fans I mean its ok but friends buy your albums. For me everyone is my friend even from distances so to my Friends/fans I just want them to know that MUFFY Loves them.

CMONGOOD: Well I don’t know if they are misconceptions but of course people think the worst of things they don’t understand. Are you a freak? Are you smashing Coach K and/or Bangladesh.

Muffy: Ok one by one the freak thang 1st..

CMONGOOD: (at this point I basically get out the popcorn)

Muffy: Dang it.. I’m not a freak at all.. I’m soo corny. I’m to colorful to be a freak that’s a dead give away. The freaks are the Spellman good wifey looking chicks. I can go months to years with out sex. I have to check myself sometimes like dang it, am I regular? When I do get intimate with people its always weird sessions like I might stop and make cupcakes or watch cartoons. Something dorkie like that, but I am a free person and I don’t like to judge others. Not a freak. (giggles) that’s soo funny to many everyone does think that. Maybe I should play off it. Bangladesh is a Cutie and Coach K is sooo swagg’d up but they are my family and are not attracted to me. Like I’m not attracted to them in a sexual manner but I feel connected to them because of my musical journey. I really would like to smash my soul mates people who I am driven to smash from my heart. Honestly I really only smash people that the universe tell me are for me. They may not be swag’d up or cute, but we are just connected in a way that makes the earth shake when we are around each other. Unfortunately I haven’t found that. I actually wish for it and pray for it all the time but I’m bout to be soo busy I guess it doesn’t matter.. but it would be nice to get flowers and cupcakes and get spoiled and for someone to think I’m the prettiest girl in the world even if it isn’t true. I would love to be connected to someone. Girl in this industry you get faced with so many disappointments. It’s a lot of times I go in my closet and just sit in there alone because there’s no where for me to be sensitive. No one to look out for my vulnerable side. But shooot when I get on I know I will have a better litter to pick from. I can’t wait to see who will come scoop me.

CMONGOOD: I think a lot of us ladies can relate to that girl. Do you write your songs?

Muffy: I do write songs I didn’t right “Get Um Girls”. One of Bangladesh’s writing team wrote that but I love writing my songs. I wrote with Fiona Simone the songs to get Coach K’s attention. I’m working on a mixtape and I wrote all of those songs. I love writing and I write everyday even if its jus a journal entry. I think it’s important for an artist to write. When I write or co-write I love the songs wayyyyyyy more but that’s jus natural. But its soo many talented hit making writer out there so I have no problem with sharing my soon to be shine with them talented hit making writer out there.

CMONGOOD: Do you write a lot of love songs?

Muffy: Every single one of my songs are about love. Every single one, that’s all I can think about right now. I can’t lie, I got a crush on someone right now and it won’t go away. I’m so in love with love I’m silly like a 9 year old girls 1st crush. I can’t wait till it goes away. I didn’t even really like writing to “Gone Hate”. I appreciate the song but because it was about hate but now I look at it like maybe I’m saying “Gone Hate”, to say go ahead and hate because I’m bout to be about love. Bangladesh likes mean and I like nice so our collabs have to be a medium of the two. If I get too nice it probably erks his boy side. (giggles) I’m just a girl.. sugar and spice and everything nice.

CMONGOOD: Have you and your team been shopping you round to any labels? What progress have ya’ll made recently?

Muffy: Yes, they have I have something going on right now that is majorly dope but I don’t like to talk about it until you can just visually see it. More growth. I’m bout to shoot my 1st major video and Gucci will be in it. “Get Um Girls” I’m crunk. I wrote the treatment for that video as well. And man Coach K is a really hard worker. One thing I learned from him that’s why its funny you asked about the smashing because that’s one of our
rules. Bizness and pleasure do not mix. Man he is soo right he truly has never come at me like that and he truly cares about me as an artist. He knew me back in the day when people was judging me cuz they didn’t know me. Before I was an artist he saw my grind and my shine then and has not once tried me, he is a real man.

“Girl in this industry you get faced with so many disappointments. It’s a lot of times I go in my closet and just sit in there alone because there’s no where for me to be sensitive. No one to look out for my vulnerable side.”- Muffy

CMONGOOD: Do you get a lot of comparisons to Nivea and Kelis?

Muffy: Nivea and Kelis, yea, most likely just because its black girls with their hair colored. I started coloring my hair because of George Clinton. My mom sang back up for him and I always admired his hair and would ask my moms if I could get it. She would say no cuz I was maddddd young so as soon as I could peroxide my hair in the sun and dip it in Kool-Aid I did.

CMONGOOD: Ha-ha! I did that too and my hair fell out. Do you think it’s annoying to be compared to other artists?

Muffy: Yes I do because we are all different but then again, human beings like to relate things to something they know They are scared like that and like to stay safe so I don’t mind it. Plus I know its going to be a lot of that to come.
______________________________________________________

It was a fun interview and it made me think about the state of Atlanta’s “underground scene”. Seemingly, alot of (not all, no shots) Atlanta’s homegrown local acts can’t get outside of their own ideals long enough to focus on their supposed love, “music”. Where as those artists choose to be distracted by blogging, parties and clothing lines, Muffy has been focusing on her sound and doing without. Shouldn’t we all want to be on our next-ness as she put it? Why is it so hard for so many artists to find a way to translate their feelings into a song that everyone wants to hear? More importantly instead of getting better, why do I feel like some artists are going backwards? Either way one thing about Muffy, she has gotten better with every song, while still staying true to her artistic vision. In the words of Janelle Monae “Dont let your dreams die, You know? Life is not a rehearsal.”

Extra: Peep Muffy’s mom Crystal Gaynor who sang lead for the group “Members Of The House” back in the late 80’s. This is her performing the song she mentioned “Share This House” on ‘The Contempo Dance Show Detroit’. Can you see where Muffy gets her flyness from?
